The Life of a Leather Bag — From Tannery to Your Hands

Every AYS leather bag has a story that begins long before it reaches you. From the tannery to our artisans’ hands, to yours — here’s what goes into making a bag that lasts a lifetime.

Step 1: The Hide

It starts with full-grain leather — the outermost layer of the hide, left intact to preserve its natural strength and character. No sanding, no buffing away imperfections. The natural markings in full-grain leather are part of what makes each bag unique.

Step 2: The Tannery

Raw hides are transformed into leather through a process called tanning. We work with tanneries that use vegetable tanning — a centuries-old, more environmentally responsible method that uses natural tannins from tree bark. The result is a leather that’s firmer, ages beautifully, and develops a deep patina over years of use.

Step 3: Cutting & Preparation

Once the leather arrives at our studio, it’s carefully inspected and cut by hand. Each panel is checked for consistency, grain quality, and integrity before a single stitch is made.

Step 4: Artisan Construction

Our craftspeople assemble each bag with precision — stitching, edging, and finishing every detail by hand. Hardware is secured. Linings are fitted. Straps are reinforced. Every element is built to endure.

Step 5: Your Hands

When your AYS bag arrives, it’s the beginning of a new chapter in its story. Full-grain leather responds to use — softening where you grip it, darkening where it catches the light, developing a patina that’s entirely your own. In ten years, your bag will look like no one else’s.

That’s what it means to choose real leather. That’s what it means to choose AYS.
