Types of Leather Explained: Full-Grain, Top-Grain & Genuine Leather

When shopping for a leather bag, you’ll encounter terms like “full-grain,” “top-grain,” and “genuine leather.” These aren’t just marketing buzzwords — they describe fundamentally different materials with very different quality levels. Here’s what you need to know.

The Leather Quality Hierarchy

Leather quality is determined by how much of the original hide is retained and how it’s processed. From highest to lowest quality:

1. Full-Grain Leather
2. Top-Grain Leather
3. Genuine Leather
4. Bonded Leather (not real leather)

1. Full-Grain Leather — The Gold Standard

Full-grain leather uses the entire thickness of the hide, with the natural grain completely intact. It’s the strongest, most durable type of leather available.

• Develops a beautiful patina over time — gets better with age
• Breathes naturally and resists moisture better than other types
• Highest durability — bags can last decades
• Used in premium bags, fine luggage, and quality leather goods

2. Top-Grain Leather — Quality Without Compromise

Top-grain leather has the very top layer of the hide lightly sanded to remove imperfections. It’s slightly more uniform in appearance than full-grain but still excellent quality.

• Softer and more pliable than full-grain
• Easier to work with — ideal for structured bag designs
• Still very durable with proper care
• Common in high-quality fashion bags

3. Genuine Leather — The Budget Option

Despite the name, “genuine leather” is actually the lowest quality of real leather. It’s made from the layers left over after the top is split away, and is heavily processed.

• Less durable — prone to peeling and cracking within a few years
• Lacks the natural texture and feel of higher grades
• Often painted or embossed to mimic better leather
• Fine for low-cost, short-term use items

4. Bonded Leather — Not Real Leather

Bonded leather is made from leather scraps and fibres bonded together with polyurethane. It looks like leather but wears out quickly and peels. Avoid it if you want longevity.
