Not all leather is created equal. Here’s how we choose ours.
It Starts at the Hide
Before a single stitch is sewn, before a zipper is pulled, before any AYS bag takes shape — it begins with the hide. The leather we choose is the single most important decision in the entire manufacturing process. It determines how the bag feels in your hand, how it wears over years of use, and whether it develops that coveted patina that makes every bag unmistakably yours.
Full-Grain vs. Corrected-Grain: Why It Matters
Most leather goods on the market use corrected-grain leather — a hide that has been sanded, buffed, and coated to hide imperfections. It looks uniform, but it’s structurally weaker and ages poorly. At AYS, we work exclusively with full-grain and top-grain leather. Full-grain retains the complete outer surface of the hide, preserving its natural fibre structure for maximum strength and longevity. Top-grain is lightly sanded for a more refined finish while maintaining durability far superior to corrected alternatives.
Responsible Sourcing
We partner exclusively with tanneries that adhere to responsible environmental and labour standards. Our leather is a by-product of the food industry — not sourced for leather alone — and processed using methods that minimize harmful chemical discharge. Quality and conscience are not opposites at AYS.
How We Evaluate Every Hide
Every batch of leather we receive is assessed across five criteria before it earns a place in an AYS bag:
- Grain tightness — tighter grain means greater durability and a finer surface
- Temper and hand feel — the leather must feel supple but structured
- Colour consistency — even dye penetration without blotchiness
- Edge integrity — clean, strong edges that won’t fray during cutting
- Scent — genuine leather has a clean, natural smell; synthetic alternatives do not
