How to Store Your Leather Bag Properly
How you store your leather bag when you’re not using it matters just as much as how you care for it during use. Poor storage leads to misshapen bags, cracked leather, and faded colour. Here’s how to store your AYS genuine leather bag properly.
1. Stuff It to Keep Its Shape
Fill your bag with acid-free tissue paper or a bag insert to help it hold its structure. Avoid using newspaper — the ink can transfer to the lining.
2. Use a Dust Bag
Store your leather bag in a breathable cotton dust bag — not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew. If you don’t have a dust bag, a pillowcase works great.
3. Keep It Upright
Store structured bags upright on a shelf. Avoid stacking bags on top of each other — this causes dents and deformation over time.
4. Avoid Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes leather to fade and dry out. Store in a cool, dark place like a closet shelf.
5. Control Humidity
Leather does best in moderate humidity (40–60%). Too dry and it cracks; too humid and it can grow mould. Avoid basements, garages, and attics for long-term storage.
6. Hang Straps Loosely
Don’t hang bags by their straps for extended periods — this stretches and weakens the straps over time. Lay straps inside or alongside the bag.
7. Condition Before Storing
Before long-term storage, give your bag a good clean and condition so it stays nourished while not in use.
