Full-grain leather — the highest quality. Includes the full hide with natural grain intact. Most durable and ages best.
Top-grain leather — sanded and treated for a uniform look. Still high quality and durable.
Genuine leather — lower quality, made from leftover hide layers. Less durable.
Bonded leather — lowest quality, made from scraps bonded together. Peels and cracks quickly.

2. Inspect the Stitching

Quality stitching is even, tight, and consistent. Look for:

Even spacing between stitches with no loose threads
Reinforced stitching at stress points — handles, straps, and corners

Zippers, clasps, and rings should feel solid and heavy. Cheap hardware feels light, squeaks, or sticks. Quality hardware opens and closes smoothly and won't tarnish quickly.

4. Smell the Leather

Genuine leather has a distinct, rich, natural smell. Synthetic or low-quality leather often smells chemical or plastic-like. Trust your nose!

5. Feel the Weight and Structure

A quality leather bag has weight and structure. It holds its shape when set down. Flimsy bags that collapse immediately are often made from inferior materials.

6. Examine the Edges and Lining

Quality bags have finished, smooth edges — not raw, frayed, or rough. The interior lining should be neat, securely attached, and made from quality fabric.
