How to Remove Stains from a Leather Purse

Accidents happen — but a stain on your leather purse doesn’t have to be permanent. At AYS Bags Canada, we’ve got you covered with safe, effective stain removal tips for genuine leather bags.

⚠️ Before You Start

Always test any cleaning method on a small, hidden area first. Leather reacts differently based on type and finish. When in doubt, consult a professional leather cleaner.

Common Stains & How to Remove Them

Water Stains

Dampen the entire panel (not just the stain) with a clean damp cloth to create an even finish, then let air dry away from direct heat. Condition after drying.

Ink Stains

Dab — do not rub — with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Work from the outside of the stain inward. Condition immediately after.

Oil & Grease Stains

Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda or cornstarch on the stain and let it sit for several hours to absorb the oil. Brush off gently and wipe clean.

Food & Drink Stains

Blot immediately with a clean cloth — do not rub. Once blotted, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap to gently clean the area. Let air dry and condition.

Makeup Stains

Use a leather-safe cleaner or a small amount of micellar water on a cotton pad. Gently dab the stain. Follow up with a dry cloth and conditioner.

What NOT to Do

  • ❌ Don’t scrub or rub aggressively
  • ❌ Don’t use bleach or acetone
  • ❌ Don’t soak the leather in water
  • ❌ Don’t use household cleaners not designed for leather
