How to Protect Your Leather Bag in Winter

Canadian winters are beautiful — but they’re tough on genuine leather. Salt, slush, snow, and freezing temperatures can damage your leather bag if you’re not prepared. At AYS Bags Canada, we want your bag to look great all year long. Here’s how to protect it through winter.

1. Apply a Leather Protector Spray

Before the winter season hits, apply a water-repellent leather protector spray. This creates an invisible barrier that repels moisture, salt, and slush. Reapply every 4–6 weeks during winter.

2. Wipe Off Salt Immediately

Road salt is one of the worst enemies of leather. If your bag gets salt on it, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth before it dries and stains. Salt crystals can permanently discolour leather if left on.

3. Avoid Soaking in Slush

Keep your bag off wet surfaces — snow, puddles, and slush. Use a bag hook at restaurants and stores, or carry your bag on your shoulder away from wet ground splashes.

4. Condition More Frequently

Cold, dry winter air strips moisture from leather faster than in summer. Condition your bag every 4–6 weeks during winter months to prevent drying and cracking.

5. Let It Dry Naturally

If your bag gets wet, let it air dry at room temperature. Never place it near a radiator, fireplace, or heat vent — sudden heat causes leather to crack and shrink.

6. Store Properly Between Uses

Don’t leave your leather bag in a cold car overnight. Extreme cold makes leather stiff and brittle. Bring it inside and let it return to room temperature gradually.
