How to Clean and Maintain a Leather Bag
How to Clean and Maintain a Leather Bag
A premium leather bag is an investment — and with the right care, it will reward you for decades. At AYS Bags, we want your bag to look as beautiful in 10 years as it does the day you bought it. Here's your complete guide to leather bag care.
What You'll Need
- Soft, dry cloth or microfibre cloth
- Slightly damp cloth (for spot cleaning)
- Quality leather conditioner
- Leather protector spray (optional)
Step 1 — Regular Dusting
Wipe your leather bag with a soft, dry cloth regularly to remove dust and surface dirt. This simple habit keeps your bag looking fresh between deeper cleans.
Step 2 — Spot Cleaning
For spills or marks, act quickly:
- Blot (don't rub) the area with a clean dry cloth to absorb excess liquid
- Gently clean with a slightly damp cloth if needed
- Allow to air dry naturally — never use a hair dryer or direct heat
Step 3 — Conditioning
Condition your leather bag every 3–6 months to keep it supple and prevent cracking. Apply a small amount of quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth, work it in gently, and allow to absorb. This is especially important before winter in Canada when indoor heating dries out leather.
Step 4 — Storage
- Store in a dust bag or pillowcase when not in use
- Stuff with tissue paper to maintain shape
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- Never store in plastic — leather needs to breathe
What to Avoid
- ❌ Harsh chemical cleaners or alcohol-based products
- ❌ Machine washing
- ❌ Direct heat or sunlight for drying
- ❌ Overstuffing your bag, which distorts its shape
