How to Care for Your Leather Bag
How to Care for Your Leather Bag
A genuine leather bag is an investment — and with the right care, it will only get better with age. At AYS Accessories, we craft every bag to last a lifetime. Here's how to keep yours looking its best.
1. Clean Your Leather Bag Regularly
Wipe down your bag after each use with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dust and oils. For deeper cleaning, use a damp (not wet) cloth with a mild, leather-safe soap. Always test on a hidden area first.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol-based products, or baby wipes
- Never submerge your leather bag in water
- Blot spills immediately — don't rub
2. Condition the Leather
Leather is a natural material that dries out over time. Conditioning every 3–6 months keeps it supple and prevents cracking.
- Apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth
- Work it in using gentle, circular motions
- Let it absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff off any excess
3. Protect It from the Elements
Water and sunlight are leather's biggest enemies. Use a leather protector spray seasonally — especially before Canada's harsh winters.
- Store out of direct sunlight to prevent fading
- Avoid leaving your bag in hot cars
- Use a waterproofing spray for added weather resistance
4. Store It Properly
When not in use, stuff your bag with tissue paper or a bag insert to help it hold its shape. Store in a breathable dust bag — never in plastic.
- Keep in a cool, dry place
- Avoid hanging straps for long periods (can cause stretching)
- Rotate bags regularly to prevent creasing
5. Handle Hardware with Care
Metal zippers, clasps, and studs can tarnish over time. Wipe hardware with a dry cloth and avoid contact with perfumes or lotions.
