The AYS Bags Leather Care Guide
A well-cared-for leather bag lasts a lifetime. Here’s how to look after yours.
Daily Habits That Make a Difference
Leather is a natural material — it breathes, absorbs, and responds to how it’s treated. Simple daily habits go a long way: empty your bag regularly to reduce strain on the base and straps, avoid placing it on wet or rough surfaces, and store it upright when not in use.
Cleaning Your AYS Bag
For routine cleaning, wipe the exterior with a soft, slightly damp cloth in gentle circular motions. Avoid soaking the leather or using harsh household cleaners. For stubborn marks:
- Use a dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth
- Test any product on a hidden area first
- Never use alcohol, acetone, or baby wipes directly on leather
- Allow the bag to air-dry naturally — never use a hairdryer or direct heat
Conditioning: The Key to Longevity
Leather can dry out and crack without regular conditioning — especially in Canadian winters. Apply a quality leather conditioner every 3–6 months using a soft cloth. Work it in gently and allow it to absorb fully before buffing to a soft sheen. Conditioned leather stays supple, resists cracking, and develops a richer patina over time.
Protecting Against Rain & Moisture
Apply a leather water-repellent spray before the rainy season or any travel. If your bag does get wet, blot excess moisture with a clean cloth and allow it to dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff the bag with tissue paper while drying to help it retain its shape.
Proper Storage
When storing your AYS bag for an extended period, stuff it lightly to maintain its structure, place it in a breathable dust bag (never plastic), and keep it in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Avoid hanging bags by their straps for long periods as this can stretch and distort the leather.
Hardware Care
Wipe metal hardware with a dry cloth after use to remove oils and moisture. Avoid contact with perfume, hand cream, and sanitizer directly on hardware, as these can accelerate tarnishing even on quality finishes.
